"center members only" forum

Post by ReneK »

Ivan,

I think we need a "center members only" forum, where everybody can read, but only invited members can write. Is there a way to do this in phpBB?

To make this more clear:

1) All internet users can read
2) All who are registered at blackboxframework.org can read
3) Only those who are especially invited (those 8 or so who have added their names to the google Drive sheet where we talked about who wants to be active in the "center") can write. If someone wants to join the team, he has to apply.

Naturally, not all forums at blackboxframework.org should be set that way, but there needs to be a "management forum" set up that way.

This management forum does not need any moderators, since only a few people can post there, and if someone misbehaves severely, he could be voted out by the whole group.

For starters, I would have this "management forum" as the only forum here, so that nobody needs to use up his time moderating passer-bys and trolls until we are all set up. When we are finally done setting up this site, with all the basic decisions made, we can open moderated forums. But for now, moderation would take away time from getting started.

Am I making sense?

Ok, I will make it soon. Rene, can you find your letter with a description of "center" roles and aim, please. So people, who wants to apply for membership understands some responsibility and what for this group was created.

And one of the first votes should be on Alexey. As long as he is not officially voted "in", he should neither write nor vote in the Center Only Forums.

I think you have to be careful how the forum is structured. It's one thing to have communications that are restricted to a small governing board, but it's quite another to use that forum for any discussion that could benefit from public input. There are already too few people in the community.

Doug Danforth's thread entitled "Killer app" is a case in point. In its current location the discussion is so obscure that even Google can't find it, so he has also posted it on the listserv, which will expire in a few days. There are only a handful of people in the world who can reply to the forum discussion. You won't get many new ideas that way.

And speaking of Google, one of the advantages of having a forum is that people are supposed to find it and be enlightened. In fact, this forum and the Center forum are quite hard to find unless you know exactly where to look. Google has a mechanism for calling their attention to a Web site, and it would probably be good to use it if that hasn't already been done.

I agree - I believe that was a mistake. The Killer App discussion should have been posted on this public BlackBox Community Forum not the restricted BlackBox Center forum.

I also agree that it should have been posted on the Community bulletin board.
Ivan, is there a way to move the topic from Center to Community?
